How to stick to New Year’s Resolutions

Do you struggle with resolutions?
Me too! Here are a few tips on keeping resolutions.

I hope your New Year is off to a good start! It’s hard to believe it’s already February. Its not too late to check in and see how those resolutions are serving you.

Maybe like me, you’ve let your own personal fitness practice slip a bit over the holidays. The good news is it’s never too late to start again. Given the current situation in our country and state, Pilates is a way I stay grounded and feeing good in my own body. I’ve made several “New Year’s Resolutions” which basically amount to a desire to set some new habits for my Pilates and fitness practice. I’ve committed to practicing Pilates 3x’s a week, walking 3x’s a week, and of course to doing the Vacation Special every day for at least the month of January.

How does one go about setting and keeping Resolutions? I found a great article on this topic and want to share it with you. According to this article by Austin Frakt in the New York Times, there are a couple of questions to ask yourself when setting resolutions.

  1. Why don’t I do this already?
  2. Why do I feel the need to do this now?

I need to understand why I let my fitness routine slip a bit in order to be in the mindset to commit to at least 3x’s a week. I also need a reason to be motivated, like feeling stronger and more flexible.

Another point the article makes it to set a realistic time frame, then reevaluate. How did the resolution go? Did it make your life better in some way? Is it worth continuing? Too often I set huge goals that seem unattainable. This year, I’m taking it a month at a time and then taking time to decide which habits to continue, and which aren’t beneficial. I know my Pilates habit is beneficial! 😉

What are your barriers, and what motivates you? Ask yourself these questions, and then commit to joining me in setting new goals this month!

I’d love to hear your motivations and resolutions, so reply and let me know what new habits you’ll be setting this month!

With Love,
Dena
