Getting the Most out of your pilates practice

You’re on your way to better health and fitness through Pilates, great job! Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned practitioner, you might be wondering how to get the most out of your practice.

Fine tune your practice with a private lesson.

Consistency is key to making progress and seeing the results you want from your Pilates practice. Just like anything you do, regularity leads to results. Taking one class a week? Take two! Taking two classes a week? Take three! Check out this article for more information on the benefits of regular Pilates practice.

There are other things you can do during and outside of class to enhance your Pilates practice as well.

In class, slow down! We often get the idea that “more is better,” but often less more. In fact, Joseph Pilates himself said, “A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.” Consider moving a bit more slowly and with intention, focusing on your breath and on resisting the springs. Practice the Pilates principles of control, precision and flow.

Be mindful! If you’re chatting with your neighbor, it’s hard to focus on the precision and breath that good form requires. Practice the principles of concentration and breath during class and see how much more you’ll get out of your session.

Establish a home routine. You don’t necessarily have to be in the studio to practice Pilates. Some of us need the accountability of a class reservation. However, you can add some home exercises to add to your fitness routine. Schedule a private lessonto get ideas for ways you can workout at home.

Get outside. As Spring arrives and things warm up and dry out, add outdoor activities to your routine. Ride a bike, take a walk in the sunshine, do some gardening, get some fresh air. “‘By all means, never fail to get all the sunshine and fresh air you can.” ~Joe Pilates
